3. The Story Behind It Is Well With My Soul

Horatio Spafford was in the most joyful time of his life. He was a successful Chicago lawyer with a beautiful wife and five adorable kids. He also had a thriving business in the real estate field and was the owner of many properties in the city. His life at that time was more than good, it was blessed.

But then, the continuous tragedies happened. First is the death of his beloved four-year-old son because of scarlet fever. Around the same time, his properties in Chicago were extensively destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 which ruined him financially.

Just a few years later when he decided that his family needed a vacation away from turmoil, he sent his wife and daughters on a boat to Europe, planning to catch up with them shortly after finishing some business at home. However, while crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the ship collided with a sea vessel and sank, resulting in the death of more than 200 people, including all four daughters of Horatio. His wife was the only person who survived among 5. She sent him a heartbroken telegram that is still famous until now: ”Saved alone…”

Horatio immediately traveled to meet his grieving wife. As his ship passed near where his daughters had died, he wrote down the well-known hymn:
